Day 8 at Aigüestortes National Park: hiking tour
A Memorable Hiking Tour Finale
Day 8 marks the final stretch of our adventurous hiking tour through Aigüestortes National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees.
This 12.5 km hike, with an elevation gain of 500 meters and a loss of 950 meters, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Mixed Emotions on the Trail
As we set off from Refugio Josep Maria Blanc towards the parking lot, where our van awaits, a mix of relief and nostalgia washes over the group.
Many hikers share the sentiment of “finally, we did it” while also feeling they could continue for a few more days.
The previous day’s hike, which varied between an 11-hour trek and a more relaxed 5 to 6-hour walk, left its mark on everyone.
Tailored Hiking Tour Options
Reflecting on the different experiences, I plan to offer two versions of this hiking tour in the future.
One will cater to those seeking a more leisurely adventure, while the other will remain strenuous for those looking for a challenge.
Regardless of the version, the sense of accomplishment on Day 8 is palpable as we imagine reaching the parking lot.
Unexpected Challenges and Rewards
This final day of the hiking tour often surprises guests with its difficulty.
Despite an easier path existing, I promise an adventurous experience, and that’s what we deliver.
Starting the hike, the group soon realizes they must ascend a steep path they descended the day before, sparking humorous complaints about fairness.
My response? “Life is tough and not necessarily fair… keep moving.” (eheheh)
This usually earns me a mix of laughs and playful glares.
Scenic Ascent and Helicopter Sightings
The ascent to Coll de Monestero is tough but beautiful, with 500 meters of altitude gain.
Along the way, we encounter stunning photo opportunities and distractions, including the occasional helicopter supplying mountain huts or evacuating someone in need.
Tricky Descent and Essential Footwear
Descending the northwest face of the mountain presents its own challenges with a slippery, degraded trail.
This terrain underscores the importance of proper footwear—boots with ankle protection, a hard sole, and a pronounced heel.
The descent, slow and steady, involves navigating large rocks, which some find challenging and others, fun.
Final Obstacles and Reflective Moments
Near the trail’s flattest part, a 5-meter vertical wall awaits, providing a final adrenaline rush.
Guided safely, everyone overcomes this obstacle, marking the journey’s end.
The last few kilometers feel like a walk in the park, perfect for introspection and appreciating the journey’s significance.
Celebratory Conclusion
We pause at Ernest Mallafré Refuge for a celebratory beer, joy reflecting on everyone’s faces.
The journey concludes after 12.5 km
