Day 8 at Aigüestortes National Park: hiking tour

A Memorable Hiking Tour Finale

Day 8 marks the final stretch of our adventurous hiking tour through Aigüestortes National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees.

This 12.5 km hike, with an elevation gain of 500 meters and a loss of 950 meters, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Mixed Emotions on the Trail

As we set off from Refugio Josep Maria Blanc towards the parking lot, where our van awaits, a mix of relief and nostalgia washes over the group.

Many hikers share the sentiment of “finally, we did it” while also feeling they could continue for a few more days.

The previous day’s hike, which varied between an 11-hour trek and a more relaxed 5 to 6-hour walk, left its mark on everyone.

Tailored Hiking Tour Options

Reflecting on the different experiences, I plan to offer two versions of this hiking tour in the future.

One will cater to those seeking a more leisurely adventure, while the other will remain strenuous for those looking for a challenge.

Regardless of the version, the sense of accomplishment on Day 8 is palpable as we imagine reaching the parking lot.

Aigüestortes National Park: hiking tour

Unexpected Challenges and Rewards

This final day of the hiking tour often surprises guests with its difficulty.

Despite an easier path existing, I promise an adventurous experience, and that’s what we deliver.

Starting the hike, the group soon realizes they must ascend a steep path they descended the day before, sparking humorous complaints about fairness.

My response? “Life is tough and not necessarily fair… keep moving.” (eheheh)

This usually earns me a mix of laughs and playful glares.

Aigüestortes National Park: trekking tour

Scenic Ascent and Helicopter Sightings

The ascent to Coll de Monestero is tough but beautiful, with 500 meters of altitude gain.

Along the way, we encounter stunning photo opportunities and distractions, including the occasional helicopter supplying mountain huts or evacuating someone in need.

Aigüestortes National Park: hiking tour

 Tricky Descent and Essential Footwear

Descending the northwest face of the mountain presents its own challenges with a slippery, degraded trail.

This terrain underscores the importance of proper footwear—boots with ankle protection, a hard sole, and a pronounced heel.

The descent, slow and steady, involves navigating large rocks, which some find challenging and others, fun.

Final Obstacles and Reflective Moments

Near the trail’s flattest part, a 5-meter vertical wall awaits, providing a final adrenaline rush.

Guided safely, everyone overcomes this obstacle, marking the journey’s end.

The last few kilometers feel like a walk in the park, perfect for introspection and appreciating the journey’s significance.

Celebratory Conclusion

We pause at Ernest Mallafré Refuge for a celebratory beer, joy reflecting on everyone’s faces.

The journey concludes after 12.5 km

Day 7 at Aigüestortes National Park: trekking tour

Embarking on Day 7 of our Aigüestortes National Park trekking tour in the Spanish Pyrenees, we leave the Refugio de Colomina with a tinge of nostalgia.

This small mountain hut, the coziest on our adventure, offers a profound sense of connection to nature and adventure.

Normally, I skip this stop, preferring the direct 11-12 hour trek from Refugio d’Estany Llong to Refugio Josep Maria Blanc.

However, many participants suggested breaking up this long trek, and I agreed.

Now, we enjoy a more manageable day’s journey.

The Journey from Refugio de Colomina

The trek from Refugio de Colomina to Refugio Josep Maria Blanc spans 7 kilometers, taking approximately 5 hours with an elevation gain and loss of 500 meters each.

As we start our day, the path winds around Estany de La Colomina.

The turquoise waters are mesmerizing, almost begging us to linger, but we press on.

Overcoming Natural Challenges

The abundant turquoise hues of the lakes contrast sharply with the rugged terrain.

We pass Estany de Mar and encounter an imposing staircase, a challenging but invigorating part of our trekking tour.

By now, our muscles are warmed up, and our previous days’ efforts have strengthened us.

The steps, roughly hewn with necessity rather than skill, test our endurance.

We then climb up to Coll de Saburó, navigating a large gravel pit.

This section requires careful zigzagging to avoid large boulders, and often, we rely on instinct rather than trail marks.

What follows is a steep descent, a common but tough part of any trekking tour.

We find some relief walking along the Estany of Cap de Port, where the tranquil waters might tempt one to camp, feeling protected from the surrounding peaks.

Aigüestortes National Park: trekking tour

Final Stretch to Refugio Josep Maria Blanc

As we continue descending, the feeling of nearing our destination grows. However, this descent is long and grueling, taking a toll on our tired legs and toes.

We aim to reach Estany Tort de Peguera, where the Josep Maria Blanc mountain hut awaits us.

This final hour feels both fast and slow, our minds fixated on the comfort and dinner that lie ahead.

Aigüestortes National Park: trekking tour

Evening at the Refugio Josep Maria Blanc

The sight of Refugio Josep Maria Blanc being supplied by helicopter is a unique and unforgettable image, contrasting with the serene natural surroundings.

The dinner here, the last of our trekking tour, calls for celebration.

We share this evening with other groups, some finishing like us, others just starting their journeys, all creating unforgettable moments.

This trekking tour through Aigüestortes National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees is an experience of physical challenge and breathtaking beauty, making every step worthwhile.

Day 6 at Aigüestortes National Park: Spanish Pyrenees

Conquering New Heights

Day 6 of our Aigüestortes National Park trekking tour in the Spanish Pyrenees promises adventure and breathtaking scenery.

Fresh off the triumph of conquering the Coll of Contraix, today’s journey covers 11.5 km, offering new challenges and serene landscapes.

Aigüestortes National Park trekking, Spain

Starting Point: Refugio d’Estany Llong

Our day begins at the Refugio d’Estany Llong.

This part of the Aigüestortes National Park (Spain) trek is slightly easier but still demands attention and energy.

The 900 meters of elevation gain are spread across seven hours, making it manageable for most participants.

Aigüestortes National Park: Spanish Pyrenees

Mixed Feelings and Gravel Slides

As we set out, the group’s mood is a blend of residual fatigue and newfound vigor.

The trail, stretching between the d’Estany Llong mountain hut and the Refugio de Colomina, features a tricky section of gravel slides.

Here, loose stones can turn every step into a delicate balancing act, especially when it rains.

Staying alert is crucial, as a twisted foot can end your adventure prematurely.

Aigüestortes National Park: Spanish Pyrenees

Ascending the Coll of Dellui

Another significant challenge awaits as we ascend the Coll of Dellui.

Much like the Coll of Contraix, this ascent involves navigating large snow patches. Soft snow can make the climb harder but is preferable to ice, which requires crampons.

Once we reach the top, the descent on the other side is easier, although still demanding focus and care.

Aigüestortes National Park: Spanish Pyrenees

Scenic Beauty and Unique Features

The landscape on Day 6 offers a different kind of beauty compared to previous days.

Instead of towering peaks, we encounter more gentle mountains on the horizon.

One of the highlights is crossing the lake area, where the translucent, turquoise waters of Estany Mariolo are a photographer’s dream.

Walking along the small dam wall to reach the opposite bank is a unique experience.

Unexpected Iron Rails

As we near our destination, the Refugio Colomina, we come across iron rails—an unexpected sight in this natural paradise.

These rails were installed when the first Estany Tort dam was built, used to transport materials from a nearby cable car.

This small railway is a curious historical relic in the Spanish Pyrenees.

Aigüestortes National Park: Spanish Pyrenees

Reaching Refugio Colomina

Finally, the Refugio Colomina comes into view, standing as a guardian of the valley.

If we were there at that hour, we could witness a stunning sunset from the balcony while enjoying a well-deserved beer.

With its spectacular views and tranquil atmosphere, this mountain hut offers the perfect end to our day.

Carpe Diem

Every moment in the Spanish Pyrenees is an opportunity to seize the day. Day 6 in Aigüestortes National Park is no exception.

Preparing for the Challenge

On the fifth day of our trekking adventure, we face the legendary Coll of Contraix.

Before starting this hike, it’s essential to assess each hiker’s readiness to tackle this demanding ascent.

With a length of 9.5km, a walking time of 9 hours, an elevation gain of 900m, and an elevation loss of 1100m, this hike is not for the faint-hearted.

Setting Off Early

Our day begins early with a hearty buffet breakfast at the Ventosa i Calvell mountain hut, renowned for serving the best breakfast among the park huts.

By 7:00 am, we’re fueled up and ready to start.

The hike starts with a descent to a creek and a counterintuitive direction away from Lac Negre, leading us toward our first climb.

The Ascent to Coll of Contraix

As we hike 3km into the valley, the exit becomes clear—300m of a steep climb to the 2745m-high Coll of Contraix.

The route, totaling 4km with 600m of ascent, presents a daunting yet exhilarating challenge.

Along the way, we pass a detour to Punta Alta, the park’s highest peak at 3014m, hinting at future adventures.

Navigating the Rough Terrain

The path grows steeper, demanding our full attention as we navigate large stone blocks and loose gravel.

Previous days have prepared us for this, but each step requires balance and determination.

Depending on recent weather, we might encounter snow or ice, adding an extra layer of difficulty. Equipped with necessary gear, we press on.

Hike up to Coll of Contraix

Reaching the Summit

The final stretch to the coll is almost vertical, requiring us to use hands and feet to climb.

Without needing ropes, we reach the top and celebrate our achievement, sharing a well-deserved picnic.

The view from Coll of Contraix is breathtaking, a reward for our hard work and a memorable highlight of one of the best hikes in the Pyrenees.

Descending to Lake Contraix

Our journey continues with a challenging zigzag descent to Lake Contraix.

The path requires careful navigation, but the stunning scenery and the sound of cascading waterfalls make it worthwhile.

As we approach the d’Estany Llong mountain hut, the sight of cows grazing peacefully adds to the serene atmosphere.

Triumph at d’Estany Llong

Arriving at the mountain hut after 9 hours and 9.5km, with 900m ascents and 1100m descents, we feel a mix of exhaustion and triumph.

Overcoming the day’s challenges fosters a deep bond among us.

We toast to our success, enjoying the camaraderie and the satisfaction that comes from conquering one of the best hikes in the Pyrenees.

In the days to come, this shared experience will strengthen our group, leaving us with lasting memories of our adventure in the Spanish Pyrenees.

Day 4 at Aigüestortes National Park: Pyrenees National Park hiking

A Leisurely Start to the Day

Day 4 of our Pyrenees National Park hiking tour begins at Restanca mountain hut of the Aigüestortes National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees.

This day, the shortest of our eight-day trek, allows us to leave Refugio Restanca leisurely.

With only 6 km of hiking and a total elevation gain of 600 meters and loss of 400 meters, there’s ample time to enjoy the journey without rushing to the Ventosa i Calvell mountain hut.

Pyrenees National Park hiking on the Aiguestortes Park

Challenging Uphill Climb

Despite the short distance, we start with a memorable 2.5 km uphill climb, gaining 500 meters in elevation.

This stretch tests the group’s readiness for the even more challenging ascent of Coll of Contraix on Day 5.

This climb is pivotal, revealing the participants’ fitness levels and mental resilience.

Assessing their capability is essential to ensure everyone can handle the more strenuous hikes ahead.

A Welcoming Respite

During Day 4, signs of fatigue often emerge among the hikers.

This day offers a chance to relax and adjust to the hiking routine.

The memory of previous ascents lingers, but experienced trekkers find solace in knowing that a good warm-up makes everything easier.

For the less experienced, anxiety can creep in, but with support and guidance, they overcome these initial challenges.

Reaching the Summit and Descending

At the highest point, the Coll of Crestada, we pause for a quick bite.

The mountain hut provides lunch boxes with sandwiches, boiled eggs, fruit, candies, and drinks.

This spot is perfect for a brief rest and appreciate the breathtaking scenery.

We continue our hike, passing by several scenic lakes, including the breathtaking Estany des Monges with its turquoise waters and majestic mountain backdrop.

A Picturesque Journey to Ventosa i Calvell

As we approach the Refugio Ventosa, there’s no rush to arrive early.

Instead, we take a well-deserved break at a serene waterfall between Estany de Travevessani and Estany Negre.

The therapeutic sound of cascading water rejuvenates our spirits.

Time seems to stand still until our GPS reminds us to continue.

Shortly after, we reach the Ventosa i Calvell hut, where a celebratory beer awaits.

Evening Relaxation and Camaraderie

The early arrival at the mountain hut allows for relaxation and socializing.

The hut, while cozy, has limited amenities, including a small bathroom with no hot water.

Despite this, the mountaineering environment and camaraderie among hikers create a unique and enriching experience.

As we wait for dinner, some play cards, others share drinks, and everyone discusses their adventures and challenges.

Reflections and Anticipation

Observing the excitement on the faces of my guests is incredibly rewarding.

Their stories of triumphs and trials add to the rich tapestry of this Pyrenees National Park hiking tour.

As we prepare for another day of adventure, the bond among the group strengthens, and we all look forward to the challenges and beauty that await on Day 5.

Tomorrow promises more excitement and breathtaking views in our ongoing Pyrenees National Park hiking journey.

Breakfast Serenity at Refugio Colomérs

The day begins at Refugio Colomérs, a place that embodies tranquility.

During breakfast, the serene atmosphere contrasts with the typical hustle and bustle of other mountain huts.

This calm might stem from the relatively easier Pyrenees hiking trails accessible from this hut, though it also offers more challenging routes for those who seek them.

Ascent to Port de Caldes: A Test of Endurance

Our first challenge is a 3 km ascent to Port de Caldes, with a 420-meter elevation gain.

This climb is tackled slowly, with a crucial rest stop halfway.

This break rejuvenates everyone and offers a moment to take in the breathtaking scenery.

I once photographed a fox, an experience that profoundly impacted my career path toward outdoor activities and photography.

Embracing the Descent: Port de Caldes to Refugio Restanca

After reaching Port de Caldes, we begin our descent.

This segment is interspersed with minor ascents, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

The midday lighting can be challenging for photography, but the landscape’s allure makes it irresistible.

This descent tests our quadriceps and footwear, revealing who might struggle with future descents on the Pyrenees hiking trails.

The Approach to Refugio Restanca: Navigating Through Nature

As we descend further, the dense tree cover signals our approach to a lower altitude.

The trail requires more focus, with tree roots ready to trip the unwary.

A nearby stream guides us toward Refugio Restanca, our shelter for the night.

The sight of the hut framed by trees, set against the lake, is a welcome and soothing end to the day’s hike.

Reflections at Refugio Restanca

Refugio Restanca offers a more intimate setting with smaller sleeping quarters and the luxury of hot water for bathing.

Here, we unwind, share stories, and relive the day’s highlights.

Despite the grueling descent, the sense of accomplishment and the camaraderie among hikers make it all worthwhile.

Anticipating Tomorrow’s Pyrenees Hiking Trails

As we conclude Day 3, anticipation builds for the next day’s challenges.

Preparing for the Day

Day 2 of hiking the Pyrenees at Aigüestortes National Park in Spain begins early.

Most guests, still adjusting to their gear, find the morning routine a bit chaotic.

Essential Packing Tips

First, pack heavier items like cooking gear and food at the bottom of your backpack.

Keep water, snacks, and rain gear handy to avoid frequent unpacking.

I always emphasize the importance of being ready by 9 am to ensure a smooth start to our day of hiking the Pyrenees.

The Morning Trek

We embark on an 11.5km hike to Refugio de Colomérs after leaving the hut.

Despite the early chill at 2,380m altitude, hikers soon warm up and shed layers.

The morning climb is gradual, easing everyone into the hike. By late morning, we take a short break overlooking Lake Obago, a serene spot perfect for photos.

Lunch by Long Lake

Continuing our journey, we head towards Long Lake, a popular lunch spot known as a “highway” for hikers.

Here, the trails converge, making it a bustling yet scenic place to enjoy our meal.

The surrounding bonsai-like trees and cascading lakes offer a picturesque backdrop, capturing the essence of hiking the Pyrenees.

As we settle in, the day’s memories of hiking the Pyrenees linger, enhanced by the beautiful scenery and camaraderie.
