Twelve villages/towns in Portugal were classified under a 1991 government program called the Historic Villages Program.

Castelo Rodrigo, from its lofty hilltop position, is a small village that looks down over the plateau stretching eastward to Spain.

Almeida is classified as a historical village, a fortified town that, when seen from the air, has all the appearance of a 12-pointed star.
